The Connecticut Tercentenary Issue of 1935: History, Development, Production, First Day of Issue, and Postal Uses

Connecticut’s Fundamental Orders (1639) are considered to be the first written constitution in the world that granted rights to citizens. It is the reason that Connecticut’s nickname is “The Constitution State.” The charter granted to it by King Charles II in 1662 expanded upon those rights. The State of Connecticut traced its beginnings to three settlements along the Connecticut River in the early 1630s. To commemorate the 300th anniversary of these humble beginnings, a commemorative stamp was issued in 1935, known as the “Connecticut Tercentenary Issue”, “The Charter Oak Stamp”, or simply “Scott 772.” This book describes the development of the stamp and its launch on April 26, 1935. The primary focus of the book is the hundreds of different cacheted first day covers.
