Rotala 'Bonsai' - Potted Plant

Rotala “Bonsai” – Potted

Scientific Name: Rotala indica ‘Bonsai’
Common Name: Rotala Bonsai
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Placement: Foreground to midground
Lighting: Medium to high

Description

Rotala “Bonsai” is a compact and highly sought-after stem plant valued for its miniature leaves, dense growth, and refined, bonsai-like appearance. Unlike traditional Rotala species that grow tall and fast, this cultivar remains short and tight, making it ideal for detailed aquascaping and foreground or midground layouts. Its vibrant green coloration and fine texture add depth and contrast to planted tanks, especially when paired with broader-leaf plants or darker hardscape.

Sold potted and nursery-grown, Rotala “Bonsai” is free of pests and algae and ready to transition smoothly into submerged growth. With proper care, it forms low, bushy clusters that can be shaped through trimming to create clean lines and structured aquascapes.

Care Guide

Rotala “Bonsai” thrives under medium to high lighting, which promotes compact growth and strong coloration. In lower light, it may grow taller and lose its signature dense form. CO₂ injection is highly recommended to achieve the tight internodes and slow, controlled growth this plant is known for, though it can survive without CO₂ in well-maintained setups.

A nutrient-rich substrate is important, as this plant feeds heavily through its roots. Root tabs and regular liquid fertilization will support healthy development. Ideal water parameters include temperatures between 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH of 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Stable conditions are key, as this plant responds poorly to sudden changes.

Regular trimming encourages lateral growth and keeps the plant low and compact. Cut tops can be replanted to thicken the grouping or expand coverage. Over time, consistent pruning allows Rotala “Bonsai” to develop its signature miniature, sculpted look.

Placement Tips

This plant is best used in the foreground or midground of aquascapes, particularly in nature-style or Iwagumi layouts where fine detail is important. It pairs beautifully with carpeting plants, stone layouts, and contrasting red stem plants in the background.
