As its fruit develops, it takes on a round shape with a light tan spiny outer husk. This fruit, often referred to as a nut, ripens to a dark mahogany brown with a light tan spot, resembling a buck’s eye— hence the name "buckeye." Ohio Buckeye also produces large, palm-like dark green leaves that form a dense canopy, providing excellent shade.
