🌿 Ludwigia Peruensis (Ludwigia glandulosa) – Rare & Striking Red Accent Plant

Ludwigia Peruensis, correctly known as Ludwigia glandulosa, is one of the most colorful and unique members of the Ludwigia family. Native to the wetlands of the southeastern United States, this species has earned a reputation among aquascapers for its bold red-to-burgundy foliage, upright growth, and striking presence.

Often mislabeled in the aquarium trade as Ludwigia perennis or Ludwigia peruensis, this plant is easily distinguished by its rigid stems and lanceolate leaves that develop rich, wine-red coloration under high light. In lower light, the leaves transition to olive-green with red undersides, offering a two-toned effect that adds depth to any aquascape.

🌟 Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Ludwigia glandulosa Walter

  • Synonyms: Ludwigia cylindrica, Ludwigia glandulosa "Perennis"

  • Common Names: Cylindricfruit Primrose-Willow, Ludwigia Peruensis

  • Family: Onagraceae

  • Origin: Southeastern United States

  • Growth Habit: Upright, rigid stems with alternating lance-shaped leaves (3–11 cm long)

  • Coloration: Wine-red to burgundy under strong light; olive-green with red underside in lower light

🌱 Growth & Propagation:

  • Lighting Needs: Medium to very high light is required for intense red coloration.

  • CO₂ & Fertilizers: Strongly recommended; requires a consistent supply of iron, micronutrients, and macros (NO₃: 5–25 mg/L, PO₄: 0.1–3 mg/L).

  • Growth Speed: Medium to slow; sheds lower leaves if light is insufficient.

  • Growth Method: Submersed stems grow upright with minimal branching; lateral shoots form after trimming the main stem.

  • Temperature Range: 10–27 °C (optimal 22–25 °C).

  • pH Range: 5.0 – 7.0

  • Water Hardness: KH 2–10 °dKH | GH 0–30 °dGH

  • Nutrient Substrate: Recommended for best results.

  • Can Be Grown Emersed: Yes; emersed growth produces woody creeping and upright shoots with small green flowers.

  • Propagation: Cuttings or seeds.

🖼️ Aquascaping Benefits:

  • Bold Accent Plant: Provides a vivid red-to-purple focal point in Dutch-style or nature aquariums.

  • Contrast Effect: Stunning alongside light-green stem plants or carpeting plants.

  • Structured Growth: Slow, upright habit makes it perfect for “plant streets” or solitary midground groups.

  • Rare & Distinctive: Less common than other Ludwigia species, making it a collector’s favorite.
