Gabbeh Rug

Gabbeh rugs are traditionally woven by Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars province around Shiraz. Originally made for sleeping, they feature a high pile for added warmth. The uneven, hand-spun wool, rich in lanolin, gives the surface its distinctive, grainy texture. Many Gabbehs display natural tones such as cream, brown, and grey, while red, yellow, green, and blue shades are achieved using plant-based dyes. Most designs are minimalistic; when motifs appear, they often depict stylized scenes from nomadic life—such as goats, camels, dogs, plants, or people.
